53: Senior Portrait Session

It has been a little while since i’ve last picked up my camera and captured some images. I am happy to announce that I am back at it with the photography and in todays episode I am sharing a little about my first photo session after a long break. For my parents out there when you have a new born you already know that your time is now consumed with caring for your little one. The late nights, early mornings, bottle feedings, and bottle cleanings. Well after a year my wife and I are beginning to find our rhythm once again. This past weekend I had the awesome opportunity to capture some senior portraits. I have only done a few other photo sessions like this before but like riding a bike it was a smooth transition into the regular work flow. The day was overcast and for those who know me an overcast day is a close second to capturing photos during the sunset. As I was capturing the images the thoughts of my children one day being seniors in high school filled my mind and the thoughts of what that will be like. Who will they grow up to become and what will they desire out of this life.

19: Ending The Photography Podcast

Today Im announcing the end of my photography podcast. Well not so much an end but more of a re branding. I have been thinking about what my intentions were for this podcast for a few months now and came to the realization that though I love capturing images I don’t really love talking about cameras or photography. So I decided to talk about something that I am passionate about on this podcast. That something is parenthood and being a father. I have envisioned being a parent for as long as I can remember and now that I am its something I talk about often in my day to day. I am also looking at this as a catalog of experiences that my children can ( if they want to) look back on and hear my thoughts or words of advice. As we get older we sometimes forget what it was like raising our little ones so when our children one day become parents I think it would be great to not only be able to help but to also have something like this that documents my learning/journey as its happening. So thank you for those who have supported the podcast. If hearing about parenthood interests you stick around.

17: Canceled Appointments & re-Scheduling

In todays episode we’re talking about clients who pull a no call no show or even those who need to re schedule. Lots of factors come into play when things change last minute but one thing that should hold steady is the customer service you provide. Oh and we also talk about the new movie A Star Is Born.

16: Sunset Engagement Session

Today on the podcast Im talking about a sunset engagement session I have booked for this weekend. Some of the things I like to prep mentally leading up to any photo session is a list of poses as well as what gear I would like to bring. The location of this shoot will be the dunes so having the proper cleaning tools on hand is important when working around sand.

15: iPhone X Photography

New phone = new upgraded camera. So how do I capture better photos with the new iPhone X? In todays podcast we go into detail about some of the things you can do to step up your photo game. Some things still remain the same no matter the device you are using.

  1. The Rule of Thirds.

in your cameras settings you can turn on the “grid” overlay. This will overlay some intersecting lines onto your screen. Then make sure one of the object you want the viewer to focus on in one of these cross sections. This is a simplified explanation of the rule of thirds.

  2. Clean Your Lens

No matter how expensive your camera may be shooting with a dirty lens will result in amateur quality images. Unless it is a creative direction you are taking with your photograph I recommend cleaning your lens before capturing any image.

  3. Using the cameras features

As always thank you guys for your continued support of the podcast and if you found me through IG or Youtube be sure to leave a like and a comment if you have podcast suggestions.

12: Setting your price as a photographer

The transition from doing free photo sessions as you build your portfolio to telling those first potential clients that you are now charging for your services can be hard. It is a door we all have passed through as we move to monitize our time. In todays podcast I talk about how to find your price as a photographer.

09: Photographing At The Griffith Observatory

Photographing at a popular location like this can be a daunting task for a photographer. When the goal is to capture engagement photos it can be even more of a challenge because for engagement photos the goal (at least mine) is to ensure that the couple is seen together and more importantly ALONE. So working in a busy area with lots of foot traffic takes first and foremost patients from the couple and more importantly from the photographer. In todays podcast I share a bit from my fist engagement session at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.

08: Guests Brining A DSLR To A Wedding.

How to deal with a guest who decides to bring their pro or prosumer level dslr to a wedding you are hired to capture. As a preface to this podcast episode it may come off as a little bit of a rant but i assure you this is not my intention. Every wedding I have had the opportunity too capture has had at least one person with a dslr camera. Don’t get me wrong I am not opposed to people capturing the day to share on their social media or to look back on later but leave the big camera at home. I say this to all those who are on the fence about brining their dslr to a wedding. Maybe you want to get into wedding photography and think this is a good way to build your portfolio. I say think about the potential photos the paid photographer may miss out on because the guests think you are also their as a hired hand. Couples spend good money so that their guests can enjoy the celebration with them and one of the reasons they hire a photographer is to capture the day for them. If a friend or family member is out their confusing guests as to who the paid photographer is it leaves room for missed moments.
